The inside of a bomb shelter is the only life Hannah has ever known. In the days leading up to her society’s reclamation of the earth, she struggles to make sense of the only world she’s ever known. She has been taught that it was evil men making evil choices that doomed the world to a nuclear winter. Are those same forces waiting for her above? Are those same forces in the bomb shelter with her?
The play consists of just one set and only a handful of characters, making it manageable to stage.
Sheltered was written back in 2010 when I was taking a course in San Diego through the National Endowment for the Humanities on the nature of evil. Our final project was to create some sort of product that synthesizes our learning, so I came up with this play as a way to grapple with our hazy definitions of good and evil. Hopefully this play captures your attention a fraction as much as the works of Hannah Arendt captured mine!
